The Lake Placid After School Program, also known as The Lake Placid Child Care Committee is a non for profit, after school program that benefits the children of the LP Elementary School. The program started in 1989 when a group of local, working moms recognized the need to have a safe and educational environment for their children from the hours of 3 - 5:30 pm, while they worked.
This successful program has been the only North Country after school program to continue to thrive in a challenging economy, thanks to continued support by the school, its administration and staff, the community and elementary school families. The program’s focus is to educate through meaningful and physical activities. These activities include a structured homework time where students get support from staff, middle/high school mentors and their teachers; field trips, in house demos, arts and crafts, and organized sports Many of the great in house demos come from staff at the Lake Placid High School. Art Teacher Sandy Huber has worked with our program to show children how to create art through various mediums including pottery, drawing and painting. Retired Family and Consumer Science teacher Marsha Roy has taught our students how to sew while math gurus Robyn Poulsen and Tammy Casey helped students explore math through the use of technology and paper airplanes. Recently, students were able to visit high school science teacher Frank Brunner. Mr. Brunner, chemistry and physics teacher at the LPHS, invited students to his lab to experiment with the chemicals lithium, barium, sodium, potassium, copper; friction and sound with a bell jar. We are frequently able to take the children on field trips around the area including: Apple picking at Apple Jacks; Corn Maze at Tucker Farms; swimming at NCCC; ice skating; tobogganing; tubing at Mt. Pisgah; trips to the Wild Center; movies; bowling; and hiking. Many activities engage students in a variety of interests. The After School Program regularly does science experiments, arts and crafts, baking and sewing. We do several fundraisers to offset the cost of the activities we offer. One of our most popular fundraising events is Touch-A-Truck. Each May approximately 50 community members and businesses voluntarily offer up their vehicles for kids of all ages to explore, sit in and pretend to drive. Also on that day we host a Strongman competition where individuals who sign up can compete in various lifting and pulling activities. This Saturday, November 1st is our 6th Annual Pancake Breakfast. Breakfast which runs from 8 am to 11 am at the LPES Cafeteria will include ummy pancakes, bacon, sausage, locally roasted coffee, juice and real Adirondack maple syrup. All breakfast food is being donated by local businesses so 100 percent of the proceeds will benefit the children of the Lake Placid After School Program. The program is available to any elementary student, grades K-5.
